Grossglocknerstrasse is the most famous road in Austria. And along one of its 48 kilometers, standing at 2,300 over sea level, is the Guesthouse Mankei. This thorough renovation aims to turn this rustic chalet into a lively stopover for racing aficionados and hikers. A new concrete shell will lend a sense of Alpine roughness to the building, while an elevated glass pavilion with wooden screens provides an alternative setting to enjoy the landscape. The screen’s pattern is inspired by the great number of migrating birds that fly over Grossglockner mountain.
